Our Story

Gated entrance before and after.

In the winter of 2008 the search for land in the mountains became a focus, specifically, land with a natural supply of water. Two years later, and a long list of properties seen for sale in the Appalachians of North Carolina, we arrived  at the gate of what was to become Milima Ranch.

Previously, the property was owned by a family with a Bed and Breakfast/Llama trekking business and it was their foresight to place 272 acres into a conservation easement with The North American Land Trust (NALT).

By 2005 another group had purchased the land with the intention of creating a mountain preserve with 29 home sites and a spa. Phase 2 was to follow on the adjoining 192 acres. Three years later the development, along with countless others in WNC, folded and the land with 2 cabins sat vacant.

Improvements made since 2010 have been gradual and rewarding.

In July of 2010, camping on the floor of the large cabin during the due diligence period, we explored every inch of the 400 acres which was perhaps more than we had envisioned taking on! After much consideration, we decided to go ahead with the purchase of the entire property and closed in September.

“What a delightful experience! From the gourmet kitchen, to the most comfortable beds all with luxury linens and private bathrooms, the most incredible views, and 400 acres of our own to hike on and give us our much needed privacy, easy access to anywhere we wanted to tour, made this one of our most memorable vacations ever ! Would rate this as a 5 star Property, which we hope to be able to rent every year!” – Dale and Joanne S.

“We just got back after a 1-week stay and really didn’t want to leave. This place is magical. It has a rustic log cabin feel with all the luxury amenities you could think of. We love the screened porch, where we had almost all of our meals while grilling downstairs. Kids and adults alike enjoyed the campfire (at a very nicely set fire pit) with plenty of wood provided. My other favorite place was the balcony on the side of the house with the day bed where you can relax while listening to the birds and the creek that is running right by the house. For hikers there several trails starting right outside the house. We would definitely recommend this property and would love to come back soon!”

“We had such a wonderful weekend at Moonshine Cabin. The view from the comfortable screened porch was spectacular, with the leaf colors changing every day. Sitting and reading on the side porch by the brook was so relaxing. The site photos don’t show how roomy the cabin is or the wonderful architectural details. You had everything ready from the fresh flowers to the wood stacked in both fireplaces. Thank you for a wonderful stay and we will definitely be returning.”
